About Fiona
I have been practicing yoga since the year 2000. I decided to use yoga and meditation to create strength, grounding, more personal power and confidence in order to prepare for a 7 month solo backpacking trip through the jungles of Central America and Mexico. It was my first big journey alone and I had alot of fear! Yoga was a key ingredient to keep me on my courageous path. Upon my return, and a move to the cliffs of Encinitas, California in 2002, my yoga practice became more of a lifestyle and this is when I began to contemplate the idea of becoming a yoga teacher. For several years I practiced different types of yoga (Ashtanga, Hatha, Anahata, and Bikram) seeking the one style that truly resonated with me. I finally found it and received my yoga certification with Corepower Yoga Studios, where I was provided with a balance between physical strength and a yoga philosophy compatible with my own which is: a belief in the importance of adhering to the established tradition while at the same time taking a non dogmatic approach adapted for individual situations and needs.
On a new and different adventure I moved to Costa Rica in 2004 originally with an intention of running a yoga retreat and sushi bar. Half of that goal materialized. I owned and operated Fifi's Sushi Bar for two years. Returning home once again with an intention of dedicating myself to yoga, I knew in my heart that it [Costa Rica] was not over for me yet!
Unplanned as most adventures seem to be, (at least mine anyway:) I was fortunate enough to land several yoga teaching positions on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand working for Detox resorts. Shortly thereafter on yet another auspicious turn of events I found myself in India traveling near the Tibetan border. Traveling with my best friend and colleague Kimberly Mackesy, I showed up on the doorsteps of the BKS Iyengar Yoga Institute where she was already registered and accepted. I meekly asked if I could attend and luckily for me they said yes! I was honored with an amazing yoga education under the Yoga Guru himself, BKS Iyengar. While attending the institute I also attended another school around the corner, The Kaivalya Yoga Institute where I studied pranayama under Dr. Nitin UnKule. Wow, what a ride I have been blessed with!
